A Secret Story Behind the Origin of Golf
792mm×498mm
in English
proto gothic, uncial

This is one of the most interesting and remarkable episodes in ‘The Hobbit’. The plot is that during the war between the Hobbits and Goblins, the Goblin King's head was cleaned off with a wooden club. His head falls down a rabbit hole, which is said to be the origin of the game of golf, hence the title. Influenced by the colours of the book cover that author J.R.R. Tolkien was particular about, I chose blue and green for the letters. However, I couldn't decide on the colours of the decorative letters for a long time; many of the colours were not clear on the dark brown paper. I did trial and error. Despite I thought it still looks bad...., many people have commented that the colours are beautiful. The highlight of the text is the illuminated 'I', which is over 50 cm long and matches the height of the text. The original 'F' is also noteworthy.

If you have ever seen a dragon in a pinch, you will realize that this was only poetical exaggeration applied to any hobbit, even to Old Took's great-grand-uncle Bullroarer, who was so huge (for a hobbit) that he could ride a horse. He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields, and knocked their king Golfimbul's head clean off with a wooden club. It sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit-hole, and in this way the battle was won and the game of Golf invented at the same moment.
